"Suzume" is a coming-of-age story of a 17-year-old protagonist named Suzume, set in various places in Japan affected by natural disasters, where the girl must close the doors that cause the destruction.

Suzume's journey begins in a quiet town on the island of Kyushu (in southwestern Japan), where she meets a young man who tells her, "I'm looking for a door." Suzume finds a lone faded door standing upright amidst the rubble, as if protected from the disaster that has occurred there. Clearly attracted by their power, Suzume reaches for the door handle... The doors begin to open one by one in Japan, wreaking havoc on everyone in their vicinity. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.
